Good morning, Don B. Would split up
with two days in Taormina and two days
in Palermo. Palermo is just to far
out of Taormina to be as day trip, and
get a good feel for Palermo. It is a
congested city for driving and would
suggest you use a tour(s) for seeing
of the main attractions of Palermo
and Monreale (don't miss). Places out
of Palermo might be Mondello, Segusta,
Selinunte on the way to Agrigemto, and
also Cefalu on the way to Palermo. From
Taormina you have Siracusa and Pza Amerina of very good interest..
Richard of Lagrange Park, Il..

I was supposed to stay in Palermo 2 days but only stayed one and rented the car a day early. I found that that was enough to see the city. I agree that Monreale is great to see - especially if you're staying in Palermo for 2 days.

Besides Taormina, I really enjoyed the sights of Siracusa - wonderful natural and man-made "ruins"...

Dona

I've toured the entire island of Sicily & my favorite cities were Siracuse (especially Ortygia), Cefalu, Taormina, & Palermo. Cefalu & Taormina are both beautiful coastal towns; Cefalu has a little more character & is not as touristy as Taormina, but either town is great. You should experience Palermo at least for one day. Also, a "must see" is the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Mt. Etna ! If I was going, and certainly hope to do so one day, I'd include an expedition to see the volcano. Or as another poster mentioned, you can explore the Aeloian Islands, which are off the north coast of Sicily --- take a ferry from Messina to Lipari. Lipari is the largest of these cluster of islands. You can also do a daytrip to island of Stromboli, whose volcano is "mildly active".

A couple of websites to seek out more info:
http://www.etnaholiday.it/index_ing.htm
http://stromboli.sicilian.net/
