Paestum from Sorrento
We will be staying in Sorrento in June and will be taking a day trip to Paestum. What is the fastest and most comfortable way to get there? We will be visiting the Amalfi towns on a different day and therefore are not looking for stops on the way.
Have read of various options from Sorrento: bus to Salerno, then train/bus to Paestum, or bus to Positano, ferry to Salerno, bus/train to Paestum, or train back to Naples, train to Salerno, train/bus to Paestum.
Won't be hiring a car and probably can't afford private driver.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Mpoll - I think it's quickest if you go by train from Pompei, which is the nearest mainline station. Trains from there are approximately hourly, and take about 55 mins.

From Paestum station it's about a 10 min. walk to the temples.
From Sorrento you can reach Pompei Scavi by Circumvesuviana train (30 mins), then cross to the mainline station. Not sure how far this is, but there are taxis if it's too far to walk.
Hope this helps ...

Steve's approach is the quickest by public transportation. However, you'll have to transfer from the Pompei Scavi Circumvesuviana station to the Ferrovie dello Stato Pompei station. On foot, it takes 15-25 minutes. Bear in mind that the Circumvesuviana line (Sorrento to Naples) and the Ferrovie dello Stato line (Naples to Paestum) are totally separate. However, the train to Paestum is much faster than taking the bus from Salerno. The train station at Paestum is 800 yards from the Temples, or a 10 min. walk.

Hi mpol,
What we think is the nicest, even though it is not the fastest way, is the way we went.
Take the ferry from Sorrento to Salerno and the train from Salerno to Paestum.
Returning, you will be too late for the ferry.
Take the train from Paestum to Salerno, the bus to Amalfi, where you change buses, and the bus along the coast road back to Sorrento. The bus to Sorrento waits for the bus from Salerno at Amalfi. No waiting.
You get to see the unbelievably blue Mediterranean during the day and the moonlight on the water on your return.
Enjoy your trip.
