When you try to book, there is a list of available accommodation. The train from Roma Termini at 2300 to Palermo seems to have only seats and Excelsior sleeping compartments which are single or double compartments with showers and toilets. Only the older sleeping cars have three-berth compartments. Which trains have you tried? Where are you actually going?

Hi Geoff,
Many thanks for your quick reply. Here is the bare bones of our situation: I am meeting my sister and brother-in-law in Rome, then we are going to Palermo in Sicily by overnight train, and also returning after 5 days to Florence. The problem is I can't seem to find out how to book this. We will require a sleeper compartment for three people as it's overnight, but I'm afraid as I'm virtually a beginner on the internet, all I'm achieving here is frustration. I have been trying to reach Tranitalia and Eurorail, but no luck as they give me connflicting information, and at this point in my search, I have no clue what to do. If you have any information that you could pas on to me I would be delighted to receive it.
Other than that, thanks again for your reply.
Mauramia.

The Trenitalia website shows several overnight trains from Roma to Palermo. I tried booking on the one leaving at 2132 which arrives in Palermo at 0945, and it has three-berth compartments. The total cost for three people is 242.94 euros. Sleepers are neither first nor second class and the fare depends only on how many people are in the compartment; some trains have excelsior carriages with compartments with bathrooms, but these have a maximum of two berths in a compartment. You should be able to book this on line, through an agent, or at a station in Italy.
Another option is an overnight ferry from Napoli (www.tirrenia.it or www.snav.it) or Civitavecchia (www.gnv.it); these will offer better accommodation than the train.

Morning Geoff.
You have been so very generous passing this information on to me, and I thank you so very much. I will, as you have sugested, try the email address's you posted to me, later on today, and will let you know if It has been successful, or I hit another wall. By the by, I also have my sister in Ireland trying to crack this pre booking effort from her end,but again without results.
Best Wishes,
