I'm interested in going to The Theatre of the Estates, to see Don Giovanni July 17 or 18.

I'd rather get the tickets after we arrive just in case plans change.

What would you guess the chances of getting 1 or 2 tickets when we arrive?

We've been to the State Opera a couple of times. First time was in February and we just bought our tickets for Madame Butterfly at the tourist information centre once we got there. We were lucky enough to get seats in the front row of the stalls, but it was a full house. We went back in April of last year to see Carmen and booked tickets in advance (for a box) through the offical ticket dealer for the theatre:- http://www.bohemiaticket.cz/

They deliver the tickets to your hotel and seem very reliable. Again the performance was a sell-out. I'd strongly recommend you buy in advance, its a great experience and would be a shame to miss. I just checked the availability for the 17th and 18th and there are seats but not that many!

Actually, I've been to that production on 3 different occasions (it plays there every year!) You can definitely get tickets even on the day of, so no need to hurry. It is true that Czech prices are lower, but I'm not sure that you'd even be able to get that special price by booking online in English. If you try and do that, and it works, please post back & let me know!!

Anyway, the State Theater that someone else mentioned is a different theater. Plus, that poster went during the main season. Summer is tourist season. Very few Czechs will see Don Giovanni at the Estates, so it will be almost all tourists. So, you can surely wait, but, of course, you will have less of a choice of seats the day of. There are MANY obstructed view seats in the Estates. Anything that is side balcony means you will be twisting your neck the whole time (again, I've done that 3 times already..!)

DH decided he is not really interested in going and nothing puts a damper on an evening than sitting next to someone not caring to be there.

Will I have any problems walking back to the hotel over the Charles Bridge or finding a legit taxi?

Taxis line up right outside the theater after the production is over. Also, it is not a far walk to the bridge, and you will be walking with hundreds of other tourists, so you'll be fine. Either way, I wouldn't worry about getting home.
