Opatija to Zadar

I am traveling to Riekja by ferry on a Sunday in July. At that point I would like to get a rental car, go to Opatija (stay for 3 days), and take the car to my final destination for plane in Zadar. Can anyone tell me if this will be a difficult trip considering we have never driven in Croatia before? Or is there better transportation (more convenient to take from Opatija to Zadar?

~Traffic in July will be very heavy; make sure you take the motorway to Zadar instead of the old road, it will save you a lot of time.
It is also a safer option as the other road is winding for most part.

In case you're wondering, motorway is a british word for highway (just to clear up any possible confusion).

There are local buses between Rijeka and Opatija, usually every 20 minutes. There are buses from Rijeka to Zadar about every hour.

Thanks for the input...The motorway is safer and faster during July.

Is the motorway farther than the old road?
