Road trip instead?

My husband and I have made several trips to Europe and have done all of them by auto. We find that it gives us more freedom to stay in smaller places and also to stop in out of the way places as we drive from main points on our itinerary. We'e been able to see way more cute towns in Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary this way. We're doing a road trip for three weeks in September of The Netherlands and Belgium this year. Last year we did two weeks in Ireland in the spring and over three weeks in England. I find that most frequent contributors on these travel forums push train travel. I'm not against train travel but it seems that no one wants to consider the possibility. Just an opinion. Your trip sounds wonderful.

chacha- most folks are going only between large cities where cars are fairly useless thus the reco of trains - but for folks like you who are not in a hurry to get between pt A and B cars are great. I do not think there is an overt train bias as it depends on where the OP is going, how long, etc. I'm a big train fan but also recommend cars for folks with itineraries thru more rural areas, etc. Yes cars can be a great way to travel but it is slower than trains so again it depends.
