As I've said in another 'topic' we will be in Paris just for one night in December. Basically a stop over from the train, London to Munich.
Thanks to "Judy" we've booked dinner at Verjus for this night. Now we just need somewhere to stay. It will be so easy to just stay near the two stations, arriving into one and leaving from the other the next morning, so it will be nice to just drop luggage and head out for an afternoon and an evening in Paris, with a short walk to the station the next morning.

So, I'm looking at The Holiday Inn, Libertel which are both 3*, which will be just fine, all we need is a bed and shower. Anyone have thoughts on these two places, or can suggest a nice alternative? They are currently much the same price, around $135AUD for a non refundable room.

The area is fine for one night. If all you need is a bed and a shower, why pay so much money? Most of the hotels around there are well under 100€ per night.

I'd just go with whatever is most convenient (meaning a short walk) and that you think is decent if it's just one night. I've always liked Libertels but I'd still just go with whatever is most convenient and the online descriptions. I presume you are leaving from gare de l'est, in which case I'd choose the hotel closer to it, not closer to where I arrive. I know the HI is right at gare l'est.

We have stayed there with a tour group right across from the Gare du nord--it used to be the Hotel Gare du Nord and has a pretty nice restaurant. It might be a _____tel something now. It was fine, and had a good breakfast also. Our favorite place to eat mussels is right there also--Maison Blanche. It's fine and well lit along the broad avenue.

The Libertel isn't across from the Gare du Nord, it's down bd Magenta a bit, about a block.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn one night on our way to Straubourg. It was an easy walk from Gare du Nord, and so very convenient right across the street from Gare d'est. As others have said, though, the two stations are so close together that any hotel in between would be convenient for just a one night stay.

You will get a huge list of possibilities by visiting the yellow pages -- just go to www.pagesjaunes.fr and type in 'hotel' and 'Paris 10' (10th arrondissement) as your search. All of the hotels with websites are listed first.

We did a similar trip once, arrived at Gare du Nord on the Eurostar then had to leave the next morning from Gare de l'Est.

We stayed at Kyriad inside Gare de l'Est. Good value for money and great for one night. Well under 100 euros.

accorhotels.com would be a nice alternative and possibly cheaper - France's and Europe's I think biggest hotel chain - IBIS, Etap, Novotel - watch for special rates in August and on weekends.

I am pretty certain [Please correct me if I am wrong] that in France, the number of stars does not indicate how nice or clean the hotel is or the friendliness and helpfulness of the employees.

It's an indication of the amenities offered (restaurant, lift, etc.).

Check some 2-star hotels online for reviews - you might find a much cheaper place that is very nice.

Just something to consider.

That's true, ssander. Not at all the same system we have here in the USA (have no idea how it compares to the system in Oz, though).

While I cannot vouch for these hotels (since I typically stay in another area) venere.com has several 2-star hotels with OK reviews within a few blocks of the stations for under around 90 USD.

Probably worth a look.

If you want to be sure that everything is modern with working plumbing, you might consider the Ibis Styles at Gare du Nord (former All Seasons before the rebranding and former Apollo before the total renovation). It is directly across from the entrance of Gare du Nord, next to the Terminus Nord.
