One night in Milan
My husband and I will be spending one night in Milan before a mid-day flight out of Malpensa airport.

Any suggestions on where we should stay? We'll be coming in from Siena -- this is scheduled for early May. Thanks!

If you want to see the museums and churches in Milan, select a hotel either around the "Centro Storico", or at the Stazione Centrale for easy access to the Malpensa Express/Malpensa Shuttle airporter buses. Hotel prices range from a low of 60 Euros to a high of 600 Euros per night!

If you want to relax along the placid waters of Lake Maggiore, I suggest staying in ultra-chic Stresa, and taking the Comazzi airporter bus to Malpensa the next day (50 minutes, 7.75 Euros, reservations required).

I fly in and out of Milan each time I go to Italy and have gotten to know the city environs quite well. (I was just there in February). I would not recommend staying out by Malpensa Airport because the hotel accommodations there aren't really "at" the airport and you would still have to take a taxi in. If I were you, I would stay near the train station since you will be coming in from Siena (presumably by train?). Then the next day, you could catch the 4 euro shuttle bus (Malpensa Shuttle) to the airport approximately 50 minutes away. The shuttle is right outside of the train station - you can't miss it - and leaves every hour. For further information on Milan, check http://www.milanoinfotourist.com/home.htm and http://www.milano24ore.net/index.html?header_defaultmasterborder.html.

Buon viaggio!
We also stayed at the Hotel London the night before flying home. It's a basic but clean hotel with a helpful staff.

Your options for getting to Malpensa are:

(1) Malpensa shuttle bus from Stazione Centrale. I'd take a taxi from the hotel to the station. You can take the metro, but we found it incredibly crowded in the early morning hours (especially if you want to get on with luggage).

(2) Malpensa shuttle train from Stazione Nord. The train is only a couple of euros more expensive than the bus. We walked from the Hotel London to the Stazione Nord.

thank you all for your advice. I should have mentioned (not sure if it will make a difference) that we will have a car.

We're going to be staying just outside of Siena and have rented a car in order to take some day trips. Because our flight out of Milan isn't until 1:30, we had planned to return the car at the airport.

Any additional thoughts?
