CDG is a very large area, and there are "customs" outside every area where people have to arrive in a given terminal area. I think they have at least two or three, I suppose. So it depends where you are arriving. The train station is at the base of terminal 2E, as I recall, and is within walking distance of any arrivals in terminal 2. I've walked there when I arrived in terminal 2B easily.

Terminal 2C is close to the RER.TGV station. Passport control, baggage claim and customs are right there in T2C because it is a major international arrival point.
You can expect a long line at passport control if several international flights arrive at nearly the same time.
There is usually a separate line for EU passport holders.
After clearing passport control, you then reclaim for your luggage and exit through the customs area.
The times I have gone through customs, the inspection consisted of a man sitting on a chair in his cubicle with his back to the passing throng.
Every once in a while the customs oficials are looking for something and the scene changes dramatically.

My experience with customs at CDG is the same as Bob's. For many years, I did not think they even existed. I had never had any dealings with them. Last trip, I really looked very hard for the customs everybody talked about so much, and did finally see a guy at a desk over to one side of the large room you walked out from to go to the baggage claim area. There was no reason you had to talk to him or deal with him, it didn't take any time at all for customs as you didn't really have to go through them. I think there was some guy at his desk talking to him, so perhaps he had a customs issue to work out. In other trips, I never even noticed them at CDG.
