One daytrip from Florence

I will be in Florence for 3 days and want to take one daytrip. Where to go so many choices?
Thanks

Hi M,

I prefer Siena over Orvieto over Bologna over Lucca.

Don't forget to visit Fiesole to watch the sun go down over the city.

My vote would be for Siena, but take the bus rather than the train--it leaves you off in a better location where you can walk to the middle of town.

If you are looking for a small, relatively inexpensive day tour, check out what is available at

www.accidentaltourist.com

We did their Cooking Class, which is a half day winery/olive oil tour and then learning to make pasta and eating the results for lunch. It was a wonderful day and the highlight of our trip.

You can read the details in my trip report:

If you mean on your own then Siena is the best answer. However, I would hire a driver and spend the day in rural Tuscany.

If you enjoy horseback riding I would check out Horsetrekking in Italy. They pick you up from the outside the train station in Florence - drive you to San Gimingnano (for gelato and a walk about), 1 1/2 hours horseback riding near Siena and then dinner and a walk about in Monteriggiono....it was amazing. One of the best days we had in Florence and a great way to see the countryside in the company of a great guide, and good friends.

Hop a train and go to Pisa, or get an early start and go to Venice for the day. Its fast and tiring, but if those spots are not on your itinery, a daytrip is the next best thing!

As much as I like Siena, if you are not and have not visited any smaller Tuscan hilltowns, then San Gimignano woould top my list of places for a day trip from Florence.

Siena by bus ( you see some of Tuscany).
if you wish a shorter trip ( a few hours), Fiesole is wonderful - s short bus ride from downtown Firenze.

I am with NeoPatrick 100%...to me, Siena seems like more-of-Florence, while San G is a genuine Tuscan town. Looking out from their parapets one sees the background of every picture ever painted in Northern Italy-just breath-taking!
