One day in Prague...

I'll have just 24 hours in Prague at the end of a trip this January. A couple of questions on how to make the most of it...

We'll visit the castle and St Vitus' Cathedral and walk around the old town and Jewish Quarter; is there anything else unmissable?

Could anyone recommend a restaurant which does good Czech food?

The Castle and the Jewish Quarter will make for one very full day. Especially if walking is slowed down by winter weather.

If you had time, I would suggest the Mucha Museum, but I'm not sure you will.

We enjoyed simple, but home-y good Czech cooking in a place called Zatec Garden (I think), on Zatec street.

Worth your while to visit Jason Holt's www.livingprague.com website.

Best wishes,

Rex

I recommend hiring a guide.
When I was there last March we used the services of Dana Chaloupka who had been recommended on this forum
http://sweb.cz/travelcz/

Dana can help you make the most of your day. She's very nice, in fact I just received an email xmas card from her.

The Fodors Destination section on Prague has a good walking itinerary called "Old Town Walk."

However, since you have only 24 hours in Prague, I think Elaine's idea of hiring a guide is an excellent one.

You'll need to walk across the Charles Bridge at least once, so on your way down from the castle, stroll down Nerudova, and then cross the bridge on your way to the Old Town Square, etc. Or, save your energy & take public transportation (tram or metro) between the major sights, and stroll the bridge at night when it is less crowded. It will give you a great panoramic view of the city, so you need to stand on it & take in the architecture. Enjoy!
