One Day in Naples

There's a street there with gold shops and they sell by weight. The jewelry is as cheap there as anywhere you'll every find. One shop in particular is frequented by Italian shoppers as well. I think it's called Prato and Sons, although I may have the name slightly wrong.

I would try to go to Pompei in the morning, see the Museum in the afternoon, and eat Pizza. Or you could get a driver to take you on a tour of the Amalfi coast if you haven't done it and see the museum either early in the day or last. I highly recommend Flavio Gioia transportation service. Enjoy. Kay

Thanks for the tips. I have been to Amalfi Coast and Pompei before and actually I will be coming from Sorrento before Naples. Is there an area that you recommend for just walking and people watching. Also, any recs for a good family trattoria. How is the public transportation?

Hi There

I would definitely go up to the "Vomero" area, up the hill from the very center (accessible by funicular). They have a lovely pedestrian-only area with great shops, caffe`s, etc. Around there is also the San Martino castel which has the best views of the city and an abbey which I believe you can also enter (although I never have). Also close by is a lovely park, La Floridiana. Parts of it were under construction the last time I was there, in January, but it is still worthwhile. There is a small museum (I think featuring ceramics) in the park too.

I used to live (with a Neapolitan family) in this area and loved it!!

Enjoy,
Terra

Cindy, I recomend Via dei tribunali, it is a street that cross the most charming area of the historical center, great for walking and people watching, lots of piazzas and beautifull churches and palazzis. When there go in piazza del Gesù and visit the Monastero di Santa Chiara. It is a monastery with a beautifull garden inside full of wonderfull neapolitan ceramics. Five minutes walking from there you have the church of Santa Severa, amazing statue inside of the Cristo velato. In that area you will find family trattorias.

While in Naples, I took a funicular 2 or 3 stops up one of the surrounding mountains, and then walked down. The views were beautiful.

If you are interested in seeing an interesting neighborhood where locals live, walk around the streets near the downtown area (a few blocks inland from the harbor).
