You may want to ask the hotel(s) if they would give you a credit for future use. That way, you'll be able to postpone your trip, still use the money you've given the hotels, and the hotel will still get their money. It's worth asking anyway. Airlines, even if you bought non-refundable, will give you a year to use the credit if you cancel your trip.
I sympathize with the ear problems of children. Howver, I think travelling with young children on expensive international trips is more trouble that it's worth.

Added note from a Grandpa...I think Calamari's advice is sound. A nine-month old child who is active to boot really shouldn't be traveling. I hear you as a Mommy who may think otherwise. So maybe you just wouldn't be happy if constantly worrying about your baby.
But then can you allow yourself to enjoy that trip with hubby and your 5 year old? But maybe a delay is best till things feel right to you (still wonder about overseas travel with a fidgety child less than a year old even in the best of health).
Good luck whatever you decide. And my your little one be soon improved. Those ear infections are so common with youngsters.

For Jsmith - I assume your questions are addressed to me - We have never even thought about planning a holiday without our kids. I think a big factor here is that we are expats in HongKong and have no family here. And ofcourse, trips to Europe are 14 hours or more away, which seems really too far to be away from a child. Of course in our case another factor that keeps me from being away from the house for more than a few hours even, is that the baby is still breast fed and cannot take any formula due to allergies.
Anyway, we have cancelled the trip and have got one postitive response from a lovely organic farm that we had bboke to stay in after reaching and they have agreed to credit the money to us if stay there again this year. Haven't heard from the others.
I am now going to hope that we can go in July to Italy. The baby would be 14 months then and I think the weather would be good. We still need to discuss Bangkok for 4 days in Easter (it is 2.45 hours by flight which sounds manageable).

Deepa, it wasn't meant only for you. Originally, I had included "of the OP and responders" at the end of the first paragraph but thought it redundant. Poor decision in retrospect.
Anyway, sounds like you are happy with your choice not to go and are already making other plans. Good luck.

Boy does this bring back memories of flying across the Atlantic with freezer packs of frothy pink antibiotics! Have you talked to your doctor about those little inserts they put in babies' ears? I had one who's 14 now who had constant ear infections as an infant. When he was about 18 months we had the inserts - a two-minute, painless procedure. Never had another problem.
