Oktoberfest or bust...

We made our reservations almost a year ago and still weren't able to get a room in our first choice of hotels. Nevertheless, you may want to do a search of this forum, as there have been several postings about this subject. It appears that if you want a room, you might have to obtain one in a town outside of Munich and commute in to the city. Good luck!

If you are really insistant on getting a room, you have to know that you will more than likely have to shell out the cash to get something decent & in town (unless you're lucky). Having said that there are a bunch of companies who book rooms for corporate events at the top hotels, and end up cancelling them when it gets closer to the date. My advice - either stay out of town, or call every hotel directly and cross your fingers that someone cancels or you can get on the hotal waiting lists.

Hi, I'm going to be in Munich as well for the first three days (21st-23rd)the W'eisn as the locals call it. I count the days. I also encountered what you are going through finding a room. Luckily, I found one, only after calling around for two weeks about seven months ago. Good luck and be persistent..see ya there!! I hope.

Last year we decided at the last minute to go to Oktoberfest for opening weekend and booked a room about a week ahead of time at one of the Munich Hiltons. It was pretty reasonable, about $120 USD I believe. It was a great location, the metro stop is right at the hotel and goes directly to the Fest. I think you just have to keep trying and as it gets closer there should be some cancelations. Good Luck, Oktoberfest is a blast!

From either Fodors or Frommers Germany book I learned the name of a reservation service called Citi Incoming Hotel reservation. In June, I emailed them and they sent me back a choice of several hotels. Unfortunately, I don't have their email address at hand, but I do have a fax number-0ll 49 89 94 00 99 81. I did have to do a wire transfer and pay for the hotel in full but we were able to find a hotel close to the Oktoberfest grounds. Perhaps someone else can help with this email address.

I've had several emails recently asking if I could help find rooms somewhere near Munich. Each letter writer has indicated that they have had no luck finding anything available during the Oktoberfest time frame. Altho I am convinced that if a person looks hard enough they will still (even at this late date) find something in Munich - but for anyone still looking - here is a new page I put together with online hotels (all with email addresses) located in the suburbs and outskirts of
Munich. Most are near S-bahn, U-bahn or regional train stations where you can leave your car and take to the tracks. I have also listed the Bahn line numbers and the approximate travel time to the Munich Hauptbahnhof. These hotels and pensions come in a wide range of expense so check out the prices before you commit. Good luck. Hello Julie,

I just tried my favourite link and was able to find 6 Hotels in a minute.
Try it:
http://www.hrs.de
First click on the box in the middle to get the site in English.
When you put in München it`s important that you also click on the little box below. Otherwise the search engine is only looking for hotels in the city.
What I got were 4 hotels outside, but in beautiful locations(Bad Wiessee and Bad Tölz) and two in the city(Schwabing), very good location. The less expensive(Parkhotel Schwabing) was 378 DM, which I find ok for the situation given. The hotels outside were cheaper, of course, but then you`ll need additional money for transportation.
You can book online and they`ll email you a confirmation in seconds. And it really works!

Have fun

Miriam
