The Washington Post today has an article entitled "Reading between the local lines to find the summer party dress code" that covers some of the ground that has been covered on here.

Guess what, folks! There are dress codes. The one for Nantucket, where I live, is spot on.

A navy blazer, red pants, and a pink or yellow shirt? Reminds me of the scene in Sixteen Candles were Long Duck Dong has gone missing and grandpa is describing him to the police over the phone "No, he is not retarded."

I do so love it when someone writing about fashion recommends that people "invest" in a piece of clothing or shoes. Like you are expecting a 6% annual return on your investment or something.

Sounds like an ad for Hilfigger. Most tourists dress as they like. Never been to a celebrity's house, I suspect they don't even folloe those out-dated rules of dressing

What I find amusing is that - according to personal non-represantative studies - it's rather the "casual" crowd who comments on those fashion victims than vice versa.
Or, in other words, those who claim to have no interest in fashion or "dressing up" seem to be the most vocal in judging those who - more or less successful - seem to pay a great deal of attention (and money) on their wardrobe.
While the fashion queens (and kings) usually don't even realise the existence of the Target people.

While I will rather shoot my right foot than wear a navy blazer, I'm also quite happy that not all of us sport the same jeans+casual shirt look and that some fashion victims are there to make the crowds a bit more colorful. At least good for a smile, I'd say.

Went out to a local restaurant yesterday. We don't get many Americans in this part of the world but I knew those at the table across from us were before they opened their mouths. How? Navy blazer, faded red trousers, pink shirt. The wife and daughters also matched the description. They just looked so American. Not a white sneaker or loud shirt in sight .

It was interesting to hear them comment on the slow service to one another - service was anything but slow, just normal relaxed service with time between courses.
