Oct. itinerary

Hi, I'd like any suggestions on our trip please. Our b&bs and hotels are booked already for a total of 6 nights. We are driving from place to place. Land at Shannon- 1 night there; drive to Burren, Cliffs of Moher to Galway, stay there- 1 night; drive to Dublin for family party- 3 nights; drive to Shannon, Dromoland Castle- 1 night. Places to stop along the way or restaurant suggestions and what to pack would be appreciated. Thanks very much.Joan

Not sure about the motivation for "topping" this two week old question, other than for the fact that it remained unanswered.

The original poster would have much greater success in attracting answers - - and show some courtesy to fellow visitors to this forum who don't know about Ireland and aren't interested in your question - - if she re-posted and gave her message a more specific "header" metioning Ireland.

Here's an example:

Seeking info on attractions or restaurants for our 6 day trip to Ireland, next October.

Actually the "next October" part is hardly crucial information - - though it does show that you have plenty of time. Or was the trip for the second half of October 2002? In which case, who topped this, and why?

There are a large number of tourist bureau and related information resources for Ireland travel. A new nessage header would probably attract others who can rattle those websites right off the tips of their tongues.

Best wishes,

Rex
Joan,

Given the fact your B & Bs are already booked, I'm a bit reluctant to say this, but your plan to go from the Burren to the Cliffs of Moher, then on to Galway City for one night, and then on over to Dublin, will be most tiring. You may want to re-consider.

By the time you see the Burren and the Cliffs, and then drive on up to Galway, you'll have precious little time - or energy - to enjoy Galway. You can do the Burren and the Cliffs in one day (although at least a couple full days in the Burren is preferable), but you really need to leave at least one full day for Galway City. It features a lively atmosphere, good people watching, numerous fine pubs and restaurants, and pedestrian-only shopping. Moreover, if the weather is on your side, you'll very much want a full day of sightseeing points west, in Connemara.

The drive from Galway to Dublin is around three hours, but that's in a manner that takes no time for stops, such as some noteworthy historic sites in the Boyne Valley.

While in Dublin, try to take time to see the National Museum, Kilmainham Gaol, the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin Castle, and, for something very touristy, the Guinness Brewery.

On your trip from Dublin to Shannon (another long drive), you'll want to make an effort to visit the remarkable ancient monastic site, Clonmacnois, located in the Midlands, County Offaly. (You may also consider this en route from Galway to Dublin.

Whatever you do, be sure to get a good travel guide, such as Fodor's or, better yet, the Rough Guide, to learn more about the sites located in the Boyne Valley, Dublin, Galway City, and County Clare.

Have a great trip, but do consider sharing the driving duties.

David, let that read the Chester Beatty Library, and about where is it located? Again, thanks Helen

Joan,

My apologies for the delay. The Beatty Library and Gallery, located in Dublin Castle, is a wide ranging collection of Oriental art, courtesy of Sir Beatty, an Irish-American mining magnate. In the words of Fodor's Exploring Ireland, the Beatty collection "...is simply beautiful to look at, and should not be missed."

To learn more, check out the following web-site: www.cbl.ie

Best of luck.
