I was really disappointed in the Gargano peninsula. But I am also not a huge fan of the Amalfi coast. However, the Gargano is nowhere near as scenic as the Amalfi coast, and it is dreary drive to get there. A lot fewer tourists, to be sure, but still a lot of crap "holiday" tourist infrastructure.
That said, I had a fantastic meal at a restaurant in San Nicandro Garganico called "La Costa." It was one of the best meals I have had in coastal Italy -- and Italy has a lot of coast! We went there because the drive to the coast is so long, we had to break it up. The town is weird, but the food was great.

sorry to hear that you didn't love the gargano. we loved it-- but it's not the amalfi for sure.
what did we like?? we loved the forest (we like to hike and bird watch) and the coast south of peschici. we liked seeing the tourist areas that italians flock to in the summer (we could appreciate them, because we were there before the tourists flocked!) we also loved the food.
we can't afford a room at the water's edge along the amalfi-- but this was easily done in peschici.

We just returned from Puglia. We did a day trip to the Gargano and saw a small portion of it. We wished we had more time to explore it more fully as we did like it. If planning a trip there I would even spend a night or two in the area.
As kawh said, it's no Amalfi, but it has lovely scenery and it's a nice ride up to the top with great views out to the sea. We spent a very nice day in Monte Sant'angelo which did not have much in the way of lot of "crap "holiday" tourist infrastructure." The town was pretty empty except for the residents & a smattering of tourists. We had a lunch at Li Jalantuumene, fabulous eggplant appetizers and nice main courses. The owner was a delight and we enjoyed chatting with him.
The drive there was okay, it took us maybe an hour and half from the Andria area. If one is visiting PUglia and has an extra day or 2, I say check it out.
