(I just responded to your previous note.) I love the town of Bayeux-its centrally located to hit all of the beaches and the Caen Museum but also has a charm itself. We enjoyed the stores and had a couple nice meals there. The town is great to use as a base for that area.

Port-en-Bessin is even MORE conveniently located than Bayeaux as it is AT the beach directly north from Bayeaux. The American cememtery is right there, the German cememtery is just on west a bit, you are right on the landing beaches, and the little road that runs along the beaches is a very low hassle way to get between points and see a bit of "backstage" Normandy. The Port itself is a still active fishing village.
Bayeaux is a lovely little town but no big disaster if you stay in Port-en-Bessin. I've stayed at 2 very nice hotels that I believe have that address: Chateaux de Sully and Le Cheneveriere (sp?!). I ususally make it into Bayeaux on market day and one or 2 nights for dinner but otherwise actually prefer the countryside.
