Northern Spain
We're planning to devote one week of our two week honeymoon to Northern Spain. We know we want to hit San Sebastian and Santiago de Compostela. Any suggestions on where to spend the in-between days and nights? We love historical towns with great bars.

place to stay in San Sebastian! Please read my posting entitled "San Sebastian summer housing". I am so anxious to hold on to this beautiful apartment that I am more than happy to clear out of it for a few days at a time and travel and rent it out for weekends. So if you are looking for housing in S.S., which is ENORMOUSLY expensive, tell me what dates you will be there and I may be able to give you the private use of my apartment, which is ideally located, beautifully furnished, and clean as a whistle!

[email protected]
jordan kaye

There are so many place to visit between those two destinations!. Karen Brown gives a few good ones in her book,"Spain- Charming Inns and Itineraries", I for one, would spend a day or two in Leon.Leon has great bars in the Barrio Humedo and +, it is a super historical city, with one of the most beautiful gothic Cathedrals in all Europe, plus San Isidro called the Sistine Chapel of the Romanic period and a great Parador to stay, one of the few Paradores that can show 5 stars. In the Parador there is a cloister and a real Church, and it is not expensive.
Leon is in the Camino de Santiago an ideal Place to stop on your way to Santiago. Also there smaller historical smaller towns on the Camino de Santiago not to be missed. Buena suerte..

Burgos is a very nice place. A little bit out of your way, but very much worth the trip. It has a very nice medieval festival ambiance.

Bilbao is more or less on the way. The Guggenheim alone justifies the trip. Guernica is also nice, as is driving around the cost in the Basque Country. Very nice scenery.

Bilbao is an easy day trip from San Sebastian to the east or Santander to the west.

The entire Northern coast between San Sebastian and Santiago is fascinating, but ut takes longer than a week to do it justice. If you are set on Satiago and San Sebastian, you may just want to spend a day driving between them (and it will be a very, very long day of driving, especially in Galicia and Asturias) or consider flying.

IF you do have some time, I would do this trip in 3-4 days, stopping at Santillana del Mar, then in the Picos de Europa, then in Galicia itself, if possible along the northen costa de ola muerte. La Coruña is also a great city.

I drove that whole region last year and had a great time. Catch up on your Hemmingway and go through Roncesvalles and Burgette on your way to Pamplona. San Sebastian is beautiful, but have alternate plans- it rains a lot. If your day at the beach get's rained out check into La Perla Spa. There are wine regions in Rioja, but I didn't make it to any of the wineries. Sounds like a good honeymoon trip though. Try checking the archives for posts from Meribel. She was a great help in planning my trip last summer; full of all kinds of ideas for places, resturants, etc.
