northern italy for 3 weeks may/june

Hello all. We have been to Italy before so our focus is on N Italy this time. We will be celebrating our 30th anniversary. I think this is our final itinerary but as always am open. We have made changes due to you comments which I appreciate. We are moving around a bit more that I wanted but think it has to be this way.

Arrive Bologna 5/29. stay in rental for a week. day trips to ravenna, florence (want to see ufizzi as it had been bombed 30 years ago when we were there on honeymoon!),
all day food tour so we have 3 days to tour bologna

6/5-6/8 train from bologna to turin. 3 nights here. will pick up automatic rental car in turin on 6/8 departure

6/8-6/11 3 nights in langhe region based in la morra. rental is walkable to osteria veglio restaurant where we plan to have 2 dinners. have hired daniela maracine for day of 6/9 for all day tour and visits to local wineries. will have car

6/11-6/13 2 nights in Aosta region. Really want to see this area but still unsure of where to base ourselves. Want to visit Gran Paradiso Park for some views and easy hikes. May do cable car for Mont Blanc but not sure if worth it to pack winter coats. Would love some feedback here.

6/13-6/16. Lake Orta. Just booked last room at Al Dom. Will have car. Plan to relax, swim and visit Lake Maggiore one day.
6/16-hotel near Linate for 6/17 early departure

How does this look? Many thanks

I like your itinerary and we have been to most of the places you include.
The only recommendation I would make is to stay on Lake Maggiore and do a day trip to Lake Orta. We were disappointed in Lake Orta due to the air quality from a nearby paper mill and we went down to Lake Maggiore every day. Perhaps that problem is seasonal. We were there in early September in a heat wave so maybe that was the problem. We also were unhappy with our hotel, La Bussola, mostly the way staff treated customers.

Hi. Al Dom is a fantasic b&b so we are excitged for that on Lake Orta. My big question is Aosta Valley mid June. Not sure if this is the right time to go there or if we should go somewhere else.It might be a bit slow at this time...thanks

I just returned from Northern Italy. Spent the month of Nov there. I am a bit older than you but almost walked everywhere. I loved, loved, loved Bologna. Art, architecture, colors, people, buildings. I stayed in Le Palme and it was fabulous. spacious apt, washer, plentiful breakfast and a wonderful location, close to market, bus and Piazza Maggiore. Private little courtyard which would be great for your visit.

Ravenna-overwhelmingly magnificent. Bought the musuem ticket for the 5 significent churches/buildings and it was a steal at 12E. Buildings were mainly 4-6thC, brick and to exagerate a little a bit underwhelming. You stepped in the doorway and were then treated to the most dazzzzling of sights! Mosaics abound and were astonishing. St Marks, Venice and Hagia Sophia, Istanbul were magnificent but in Ravenna the buildings are smaller, seemingly more intimate so mosaics really make an impact as they are so close.

Turin. very walkable city. Stayed in Golden Eagle, a wonderful apt on the main drag-VE11. Feet from the metro and walkable to Torino Porta Nuova Station. Took the free walking tour and guide was excellent. Well worth the gratuity. Great city, flea market was clothes and food. Turin and Bologna nice size cities and very classy as though you could almost sense the money.

Enjoy.

I spent 4 nights in Turin. Arrived afternoon 1pm on Wed. My apt was right on VE11 so with my back to the Train Staion walked straight down the main thoroughfare, through the main piazzas to the Royal Palace. Main sites all around this walk. So that was Wed afdternoon and Thrusday. Went to Avigliana on Thursday a wonderful, small medieval town by train just walking, strolling and absorbing my surroundings. Went to Pinerolo on Sat, delightful town I try to visit my main city and then spend at least 2 days outside it. I also try to schedule my Sat for a Market Day town and Pinerolo had a great market and fabulous food. Walk out of the train station and go straight ahead to the center of town and the market.

Not a drinker, so don't know anything about wine areas I think I have a defective gene!

Never been to Aosta, so can't comment on that.

Spent 3 days on arrival to Italy at Como and walked the promenades, took the ferry back and forth and up and down the lake. Loved Como, small quaint walkable friendly.

I do only travel off season, November (its my birthday month) and March/April to avoid the crowds but especially the heat, or anything about 65 degrees.

We really enjoyed our five nights in Aosta last Sept. One day we took the Skyway Monte Bianco which was amazing, on another we did the Valnontey River Trail, an easy 1.4mi hike in the Gran Paradiso Natl Park. https://www.10adventures.com/hikes/g...y-river-trail/
We also drove to Lac Bleu for a spectacular view of the Mattherhorn from the Italian side.

We absolutely loved Al Dom in 2018. I can still taste that Risotto with Carnaroli Rice, Blue Goat Cheese and Caribbean Chocolate Dust at La Motta Restaurant & Bistro. They change their menu often, so it might not be on it when you visit. By the way if I get back to Turin, I would spend an entire day at Mole Antonelliana and the National Cinema Museum inside. Fascinating! Plus, I didn't get to go on that elevator. Have fun.

Been to Egypt, the Met and although rated as excellent had no interest in the Turin museum. Not into movies either, so that reduced the time I needed to stay there.

Maitaitom, your post is a main reason for this trip. It was super helpful. Al Dom looks so beautiful. My husband loves movies so think we spend alot of time in this museum!
