Santander is a lovely town with great beaches....
Less "in" than SS, I would not hesitate to stay there if you can get a hotel.

I doubt you can find a nice place in San Sebastian though. I wouldn't take the chance of not having a place to stay with kids.

We just returned from Spain and booked some hotels ahead of time, and waited to book others until the day before. The only time we had an issue was on a weekend -- we had planned to go to a seaside town and were booking at the same time as every person in Sevilla was looking to escape the city. We simply changed our plans and everything worked out beautifully!

Andalucia in the summer and Northern Spain in the summer are very different. It's peak season for Northern Spain and low season for Andalucia.
