Where exactly do you mean? The regular opera season ends in the spring in most places, but then there are festivals in many places. Try www.operabase.com for worldwide information.

Hard to say, but there is no regular opera season anywhere I know of that performs in August (or ballet, either, or the regular symphony). Many don't even perform in July. August is just a bad time for performing arts performances. There are often fewer and less varied theatre performances, also.

There are sometimes tourist-targeted opera aria concerts in some cities that may be operational in August. Prague has a series like that which looks rather enjoyable (called Opera Gala).

The New York Times had a list (last weekend) with most of the European summer festivals.
I hope the link works, otherwise, you will have to register with the NY Times.
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/16/travel/16fest.html

Definitely check out the summer opera festivals. Verona is a big one, but it isn't the only one. Knowing where you'll be is important, of course, for this kind of question. In Italy, there are sites that allow you to plug in dates and locations. They give you the events. Try http://www.selectitaly.com

I'm sorry, I was refering to Paris...We will be in Prague for 2 days, so we may try for this one...We always go to the Opera in August in Santa Fe. I never dreamed other places would not have performances in Aug. Thanks for the info, though...
