First time using this site which looks so helpful! We will be taking the night train from Munich to Rome in September. I found the lowest fares on Tranitalia but am having a very hard time completing the reservation. Any suggestions? Also after landing at the Frankfurt airport we are planning to take the train to Amberg, Germany. What's the best way to get there? Thanks.

As for the Munich to Rome night train, be careful. I haven't stay current with Trenitalia for a few years, but last time I was &quot;up&quot; on it, the only way you could collect tickets from Trenitalia was <u>in Italy</u>. Makes it kind of impossible if that's your destination. Maybe they have changed their procedure and now let you self-print tickets, or they mail them, but make sure before you buy. You might find yourself in a difficult position.

Did you check out buying tickets on the German Rail site? For schedules from FRA to Amberg, go to the Bahn Query page, http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en and input &quot;Frankfurt(M)Flughaven&quot; and &quot;Amberg&quot;. If you are willing to pay the price for an express train to Nuernberg, there is an ICE from FRA to Nuernberg and a regional train from there to Amberg.

Thank you so much for your help - I am overwhelmed with all the information. Banhof.de also offers the trip but it was more expensive than Trenitalia. My husband and I lived in Amberg 39 years when he was in the service so we decided to return for our anniversary. About the train: I had no idea about putting in the address you recommended instead of just Frankfurt. I just went to the site and it gave me many options to chose. How can I tell what's a fast train and a regional. I appreciate your help.

The InterCity Express (ICE)are the fastest trains in Germany, followed by the InterCity (IC) and the EuroCity (EC) trains which go about as fast but make more stops. The RE and RB (also ALX and BOB, in Bavaria) are regional trains and tend to stop at all the stations and not go as far, so there are more frequent train changes.

For Munich to Rome try the German train website. bahn.de

Don't use Trenitalia. You can only pick up the tickets in italy.

www.bahn.de has sleepers for as low as 128E, but yuo have to get them the moment they go on sale.

Though usually the best prices are at bahn.de for trains to Rome some report trouble booking these. If bent on reserving before Europe - and these Allegro (i believe) night trains can be hard to get on at some periods - you could try www.raileurope.com as on these trains they also i believe have some discounted fares (on so-called 'Global Priced' trains that have a range of ticket prices with varying conditions and not a flat fare) - and as usual for any RailEurope product i recommend www.budgeteuropetravel.com to talk to an expert and have them do a manual search as RailEurope.com is notorious IME in not always showing the cheapest fare available. But compare RE and bahn.de fares always IMO.

IF you take the time to register at the Bahn site and then book 60 days/nights ahead you should get decent prices AND they will mail the tickets to your home.

You would use trenitalia only to got from Rome to Munich - not vice versa. You're not buying tickets in Italy - but in Germany - and need to pay the prices offered there.
