Hi Sheri: I look forward to reading the article right now as we have plans to take that train route in a couple of weeks! We get the NY Times delivered. I am curious how many photos will be printed in the paper when I check it out tomorrow morning...Thank you for posting!

I went to Scotland last month, but because the weather was against me, I didn't get to the highlands! I enjoyed Perthshire and Fife, but I really want to get up there someday.
I hope your photos turn out just as well!

Hi Sheri: Can you elaborate on the weather problem you encountered? I ask because what if we run into the same weather as you? Does a certain type of bad weather prevent one from taking the train route?

Well, folks, I've been trying to get everyone on this train route for a long time, and I hope you will go.
Pilates, Bad weather, short of blizzards, would not keep you from taking the train, but fog would prevent you from seeing much of anything. But I think sheri_lp said she didn't get to the Highlands at all because of bad weather. Narrow roads and heavy rain, especially when it is windy, can make the Highlands unpleasant. We have, in August, encountered 44F temperatures, high winds, and horizontal rain. We bailed out of a hike in Glencoe and sat in front of the fire at our hotel drinking whisky for a day or two until it cleared. Always something to do there, it just may not be what you thought you were going to do!

You're right - I was driving, not taking the train. I had snow outside St Andrews and it was worse up north but I'm sure your train trip will be lovely. But after that little bad patch, it was lovely where I was so I stayed put!

Ackislander and Sheri: I see, thanks. We will definitely go. (God willing, that is. Stupid volcano!) In addition, we will be taking the rail a few days later from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness which I hear is amazing too.
amelie: I wasn't sure what "The Jacobite" was (so much information can be tough to absorb it all) so I googled it and found some great footage on youtube! My father used to LOOOOVE trains and I couldn't help but get a bit emotional as I watched the footage in anticipation of our trip.
