The new HYDROFOIL schedule from Naples (Mergellina) to the Aeolian Islands has been published: services run DAILY (except in bad weather) ONLY from June 1 through September 30 as follows:
Naples (Mergellina) lv 14:30, Stromboli ar 18:30 (Adult fare 57 Euros), Panarea ar 19:05 (65 Euros), Salina ar 19:35 (71 Euros), Vulcano ar 20.10 (75 Euros), Lipari ar 20:30 (75 Euros).
Reverse schedule:
Vulcano dp 7:10, Lipari dp 7:30, Salina dp 8:00, Panarea dp 8:30, Stromboli dp 9:05, Naples (Mergellina) ar 13:05

There is an ADDITIONAL daily hydrofoil from June 29 through September 30, leaving Naples (Mergellina) at 8:30 (to Stromboil, Panarea and Lipari), arriving Lipari 13:30; and Lipari at 14:30 (stopping at Salina, Panarea and Stromboli), arriving Naples (Mergellina) at 20:05

SNAV Lines
Tel (081) 7612348 (Naples)
Fax (081) 7612141
e-mail: [email protected]
www.snavali.com

From Naples there are fast trains to Rome and north leaving from both the Mergellina train station (500 yards distant from the dock) as well as from Naples Central Station (across town).

NOTE ALSO that there is a slow car ferry (SIREMAR) from Naples to the Aeolian Islands, leaving Naples Beverello Dock at 21:00 and taking 8 hours to reach Stromboli (longer to the other islands). Departures are YEAR ROUND, from a low of twice weekly to a high of six times weekly in July and August. The car ferry is cheaper than the hydrofoil but obviously much slower.

There are also hydrofoils year round from Milazzo, Messina and Reggio Calabria, and summer hydrofoils from Palermo and Cefalu. The cheapest transportation is the year-round car ferry from Milazzo.

Thanks GAC! I have considered taking the overnight ferry on next trip to Italy. Has anyone done this? Can you actually sleep? I can't sleep in cars, trains, planes, so should I just go ahead & take the hydrofoil?
