Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau - advance tickets
We will be visiting both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in September on the weekend, and I see that the area will be busy with tourists. I thought it made sense to book our castle tickets online rather than wait until we arrive. However, I am not certain what times I should select for each castle. Can we book a tour at Hohenschwangau for 9:30 and then a second tour at Neuschwanstein for 11:30? How long does it take to travel between the 2 castles? Any other advice about the visit to the castles would also be appreciated.

First - do you have a rental car?
Second - no I think they are not close enough together. For N you need to leave time for the tour, then get down off the hill and find the way to your car and drive to H, park the car and get to the entrance.

We purchased our tickets for both castles when we arrived at the ticket center in Hohenschwangau (during spring holiday), and the ticket agent scheduled our tickets with sufficient time to tour Hohenschwangau first, followed by Neuschwanstein with transit time in between. We arrived by car in the morning and were able to connect with tours without waiting. Both castles are with guided tours so you are kept on schedule. We found it preferable to take the horse carriage up to Neuschwanstein rather than walk, and then walk down from there, past Marienbrucke.
Hope that helps.

Hi w,
We did much what fft did.
You might think that the carriage won;t get you to your tour on time (ours left 5 min late), but it will. The driver and the guides are in telephone contact.
The carriage doesn't take you all the way to the N castle. You have about a 50 m uphill walk.
IIRC, even though you have reserved on-line, you still have to get your tickets. It helps if you get them the day before.
Enjoy your visit.

We had a rental car and parked in a large lot near Hohenschwangau. The distance between the two castles is not too great to walk; it's certainly an option that many people use. I recall it taking us about 45 minutes or so to walk down from Neuschwanstein to our car, but we weren't in any great rush.

We booked the combo ticket in advance for the castles. I chose an early time (9:30 am) to start. We got to the ticket booth a little before 9:am and the man at the desk changed our
start time to 9:00 am with our consent. I found the walk up to the Hohen castle more difficult that the one from Hohen to
Neuschw. castle. Also, watch the signs carefully-we missed the first one to Hohen and went way out of our way on foot.
