Neuschwansein lodging
Two Californians (one with extensive European experience and languages, one not so much) will be driving through Switzerland, Southern Germany, and Austria in mid-Sept. We will NOT have camping gear, so the campgrounds are out, unless they have some kind of equivalent to our KOA camping cabins. We are primarily looking for inexpensive, clean lodging. This is actually part of a larger itinerary.....we will be arriving in the area from the west, and departing to the southeast (possibly Salzburg). Suggestions? Thank you.

We've stayed at Hotel Weinbauer in Schwangau a couple of times - good clean comfortable accommodations at reasonable prices. Nice little restaurant in the hotel and a good breakfast buffet. Convenient location - you can look up and see Neuschwanstein from one side of the hotel.

Hotel Mueller is very good. It is probably the best hotel in the area and I just looked and saw it is rated 1 on Tripadvisor.
Ask for the room with the balcony with the closest view of the castle.
It is situated above their restaurant.
Make sure you walk a few kms to the Tegelberg chairlift and ride to the top. When we did there were hang gliders taking off from the mountain ridge.Great beers there and some great walking trails. Enjoy.

If you are looking for a really welcoming and inexpensive place, try Hotel Waldmann in Schwangau. Its walking distance to the castles (about 30 minutes through beautiful countryside). Very welcoming family run establishment.

Another vote for the Hotel Mueller. We've stayed there several times, as well as other nearby hotels, and feel that it's the best value and the closest stay for visiting the castles. The horse-drawn carriages that take you up to Neuschwanstein depart from directly in front of the Mueller. The Mueller is not pretentious and the staff are mostly multilingual and very friendly. Their restaurant is much better than you might expect in a highly touristed area. Parking in the area is limited and expensive, however the hotel has its own free parking immediately alongside the hotel. Also, the ticket kiosk for the two castles is immediately alongside the Mueller. Current rates start at Euro 112 - 140 , seasonal. For location, convenience and value the Mueller is difficult to beat!

Addendum to my previous post . . . .
For location reference you can open the web site http://www.hotelmueller.com/ and click on each of the two pictures at the bottom center of the home page to enlarge them. The Mueller is the major building in the lower photo. 180 degrees in the opposite direction is Hohen Schwangau; the photo has not been 'zoomed in'. What you see is what you get!

Thanks, folks for the rapid response. I've never made inquiries on this site, only answered others' Q's. Looked at the Muller & Weinbauer....both are more than we are looking to spend. Thanks ira for the obvious question that I didn't answer in my post. I thought we might find a zimmer-frei or similar accommodation, or just a cabin at the campground (they have them in Paris and other European city campgrounds)for around 40-50 Euro. It's been about 8 years since I've travelled in Germany; hope I'm not completely out of touch
