stokebailey, I live in this area, well the more 'bobo' part around Gambetta, and it's closer to picture postcard Paris than Baghdad! It would help if you told us the actual name and number of the street. Because it is true that it varies greatly. But for "safety and Parisian character", Gambetta can hardly be beat!

Thanks! Good advice. I am actually more concerned about the keyboard crime of being stuck in an unpleasant rental for our Paris week than the kind where worldly goods are stolen by a street thug.

Possibly Art_Vandelay could give me an opinion about the neighborhood of 16 rue du Cambodge? It appears to be hear junction of Rue Orfila and Rue des Pyrenees, and a few blocks northeast of Place Gambetta. I will also try pages jaunes.
