need new ideas - Aug in Europe

Hi all,

I know some of you won't like my question (think it's too general, etc.) but I'm going to ask it anyways.

We are attending a symposium outside of Athens at the end of August (a last minute decision to attend.) Using ff miles, we fly from the US to Athens, via Frankfurt and Vienna. Basically, we will be arriving in Europe on Sunday, the 24th of August. We don't have to be in Greece til the 29th.

We've been kicking around ideas of what to do for the 4-5 days prior to the symposium. Some ideas have been staying in Vienna, going to Santorini (or another Greek Isle), a river cruise (couldn't find an available one for the dates we need).

What I'm asking you'all if you have any other ideas of where/what we could do. I thank you ahead of time for your help.

Spend the extra time in Greece- either Napflio on the Peloponnesean Peninsula, one of the Cycladic islands=Paros, Naxos, Mykonos or Santorini, on an island nearer to Athens, such as Hydra. Greece is so much more interesting than a river cruise which I found boring.

I'd head to Greece so you'd have time for some tourist activities before your symposium starts.

If you decide on Bulgaria, my friend who owns Chris Travel in Sofia would be a good guide if you need one.
