Thinkin of spending one night in Orvieto. We will be arriving from Rome by train. Please advise on how the town is laid out and where the most convenient hotel(s) are located for seeing the town without a car. Thank you for any information.

The old part of Orvieto is not so large that it matters where you stay.

Fixed price lunch menu is about 40E pp, and worth every penny.

When you arrive at the Orvieto train station you are across the street from the funicular which takes you up to the town/village of Orvieto. The ticket covers you on the funicular and the bus that will be waiting at the top. Keep your ticket.

The bus will drop you off at the Duomo where you will probably want to be. Just to the left as you face the church and down some steps is the Hotel Duomo. I stayed here in May and found it a very nice hotel at 105 euros @ 1.22 per dollar = #128.00 per night. Breakfast was included.

The town of Orvieto is all within walking distance from the Duomo which is the main attraction.

I totally agree with Ira. Try the restaurant Il Consoli Setti - fabulous.

When you leave to return to the train station the bus will pick you up across the steet from the Duomo and to the right as you face the church. Kinda in the corner of the Piazza.

Totally agree with eating at I Sette. One of the best meals of our trip. Also, the underground tour was neat.

Orvieto - a great choice - one of the finest hill towns in Italy - sits on an old volcanic plug and the hill is honeycombed with tunnels, some of which you can explore - check tourist office for details. Some folks think it's a house of cards that may someday collapse but studies have pooh-poohed this alarmist theory. Anyway, Orvieto - a fine fine town.

I Sette Consoli is my favorite restaurant in all of Italy.

San Patrizio is my favorite restaurant,I think it's not on the Fodorite's tour of Orvieto! My lunch there will be one I will always remember.
