We,too, own a vacation house in Southern France. This year, we decided to apply for a long stay visa which was quite easy to do so long as you have all the documentation. I suggest that you do this and then complete an OFII form for the consulate to stamp. When you get to France, send this to your prefecture to validate the visa. You can use this to apply for a carte sejour which is valid for a year and renewable. You only need to do this process once and you will not need a visa or worry about staying longer than 3 months.

Don't know if anyone has raised this but Americans are allowed to stay in the UK for 6 months - so you could do that. Or you could do 90 days in France and the rest of the time in UK (which is outside Schengen).
I think getting a long-stay visa for France may be even more difficult than just getting to the consulate. In either case you may need to demonstrate that you have health insurance that covers you outside the US (Medicare does not).
