Planning a trip to Munich for Octoberfest. Can anyone suggest a location/town outside Munich with good access into the city?

Augsburg, Landshut, Ingolstadt.

Staying with the area served by the suburban trains (S-Bahn) will give you the advantage of more trains per hour (usually three), cheaper day passes, and a direct connection to the Wiesn grounds (in walking distance from Hackerbrücke station).

Possible towns would be:
Freising, Erding, Wolfratshausen, Dachau. Also lakeside Starnberg or Herrsching, but those two are usually bit more pricey.

Yet, those towns which Dutch sugggested, offer more possibilities for sightseeing etc. They are more destinations of their own than those I mentioned.

I stayed in Garmisch-P once and day tripped the about one hour into Octoberfest - Garmisch at that time of year was mainly empty and guest houses were a bargain compared to in Munich hotels.

I stayed at Hotel Würmtaler in Grafelfing.
