Naxos, Greece: seeking 2 bedrm villa under 150 Euro/night
Hello, our family of 4 is heading to Naxos for a week next June and we are looking for a 2 bedroom villa that is 150 Euro or below per night. Am I dreaming? It can be inland as we will most likely rent a car, and does not have to be fancy but clean and with a nice outdoor balcony or terrace with some type of sea view (even if from far away) would be nice. Any suggestions? Oh, we want 2 bedrooms as opposed to an open studio style set up so mom and dad and the two teens can all have some privacy
. Thank you

You can find examples in websites such as this: http://www.naxosisland.com/accommodation.html
Some of these villas will be in out-of-the-way locations, perhaps just what you are looking for. Expand your search to include apartments, which are more likely to be in town. Will your teens be happy staying in a remote location, or would they rather be in town where they can walk to the shops, ice cream parlors, etc?

I echo Heimdall's feelings... teens want to congregate with others their age, and Naxos, thank heaven, is a very safe & fun place for them to do so. It would help if you said how old they are. 12 & 14 are far different from 16 & 17. Anyway, if they're stuck out in an iland area, I don't care if there's a wonderful pool, they'll be forever nagging at you to take them to the beach or to town etc etc.
When you say 2 bedrooms, do you mean a 3-room minimum set-up? or could you do a set-up where there's a bedroom for the parents, with door, and a large main room with daybeds for the teens, a kitchenette corner, a small dining area, & balcony for the teens. If that is satisfactory, there are many choices, right on or near St. George beach, and balconies with good views. In June St. George beach is not overcrowded (tho it gets that way in hi season), and it has many things to make teens happy (thus allow parents to collapse on sunloungers in peace). There is a water-sports center with windsurfing, and kayaks etc. And it's easily walkable to Naxos town. It's a family area.
Remember, if teens aint happy, ain't nobody happy.

thanks all.
Well, I guess we need to rethink, duhhhh. Yeah, apt in town better than Villa and the Villas in our price range are not necessarily in the middle of nowhere but are not in a real town either. Our teenage girls will just have turned 16 and 14 when we go to Naxos. We live in a suburb and they do not go "clubbing" or to discos etc. but they would like to be on their own to window shop, buy treats and just wander around and explore the streets during the day. Night time they will be with us.
Iris, thanks, I checked out these two urls. They are great for Villas.
Heimdall, I'll check out that URL and looks for apts.
Travelerjan, yes, ideally, we do want 2 real bedrooms (at least one with real doors, othr=er, not as big a deal) whose beds we do not have to make up everyday from a sleeper sofa/day bed plus our kids are adult sized (5'5" or so) so real beds would be nice. Plus, when we've done the "kids sleep in the living room" thing, we end up tripping over all their stuff
. But that is the ideal
. If the living area is large enough I guess we'll take it
. Our original plan was to stay away from Naxos town due to horrendous crowds, but if you think St George will be lively but not too terribly crowded in the end of June, that sounds like the plan
.

One place I have stayed at several times, and can vouch for it, is http://www.argo-hotel.gr/. I have only stayed in the rooms, but the complex also has apartments. Argo is run by a Greek-Swedish family who are very hospitable. Prices are reasonable, the hotel is spotless. It's located in the St George district, just off the beach and a ten minute walk into town.

Where did you get this "horrendous crowds" thing??? From personal friend who actually stayed in St. George at the time you plan to go? I have stayed in St. George up to June 8 or so, and NOT crowded at all ... yes June 25 or so will be more so, but not the kind of "mob scene" you seem to envision, from some source. Here are 2 good listings for accommodations, I would suggest you just write to any that appeal at all: http://www.thegreektravel.com/naxos/hotels.html
http://www.naxos-island-greece.com/n...os-hotels.html
I would suggest that you NOT just fill out a form, but instead compose a (very polite, letter-type) e-mail to the hotel e-mail address, and be VERY specific about what your needs are, nobody can read minds you know... i.e., doors, double-beds vs single. ( BTW, daybeds are not mini-beds, they are regular length). NOTE: you will have MUCH more choice of places with BR & main room, than the 2 br.
As for location, many hotels are a bit coy, saying only "near the beach" or "near town". I would say, any listings that say "only 50/100 yards from town square" are NOT near the beach and around too much car/foot traffic.
Here is a useful location tool; a hotel map: (click to enlarge) http://www.naxos-greece.net/site/gfx...hotels_map.jpg -- it has only a portion of the hotels/apts available (for instance, the beach seems blank to the south, but in fact does have a row of small buildings) .... but the map still is informative. It shows you where the main THROUGH streets are -- and those will be the only ones with car traffic. For instance I stay in the corner nearer to the town, but it's the quietest, the lanes there are not thru sts, mainly just walkers. If you hear from a hotel that interests you, and it's not on this map, you could send the link and just ask the hotelier to indicate "near to #26" or some such.

No, there won't be "horrendous crowds" at the end of June, but Naxos is quite popular with Scandinavian and German families. Norwegian and Swedish schools break up for the summer in mid to late June, and some German schools at the end of June to early July. That's when families with school-age children head for the Greek Islands, so late June and early July are very different from what travelerjan has experienced in early June. Actually, that's all the more reason for staying in St George, IMO. From there you can walk into town in the evenings without having to worry about parking your car or taking a bus (buses from the beach resorts to Naxos Town get very crowded in the evenings).

Thank you again traveler jan and heimall -- I am waiting to hear from Villa Naxia, which is not on the map url above, probably as it is more a b&b than a hotel but it is just south of town in St George, about 2 inches to the left of #2 -- and it a mere 50M from the beach. We are trying to book two studio rooms side by side - with balconies and beach views at under 100 Euro for the two rooms I hope they have room for us
. This will give us our privacy and our kitchen stuff at a great location. Plus they got great reviews from the major travel review sites. But I could not have figured this out without your help and patience with all my going back and forth
. Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Best regards, Jennifer aka hamburger

Heimdall and travelerjan -- since you were so great in helping me with Naxos, now I have realized that I need to rethink Santorini -- we have a reservation for a nice apt on the outskirts of Imerovigli, but I am thinking, duh, we really need to be closer to where the action is and give up an apt/villa outside the town for two rooms/studio more in town - -either Firostefani or Thira. So I am starting all over again. Any suggestions for places welcome but I am going to start with Fodors and TAs recommendations. Thank you

We were on Naxos four days last October and stayed at Villa Naxia. Very nice big porch overlooking the water. About 50 yard walk. Very pretty, white with beautiful flowers. We only spent 35 Euro for a double room, but that was out of season. Easy walk to good restauants and town. Owner arranged for car rental for a day and was very helpful.

Hi Jennifer,
Glad we could help.
This post, and the one in TA, both have Naxos in the title, and won't necessarily attract the attention of Santorini experts. Suggest you start a new thread with Santorini in the title for your question on Firostefani or Fira.
