I'd love to be able to spend a long time in Naples. My own stays there have been very brief. I'm not sure it's a matter of how much time you spend there but also a matter of temperment. Naples is unlike any city in America -- or Europe -- that I can think of. It makes Las Vegas look like a Sunday church social. There is very little organization in Naples. People are moving, talking, arguing, jostling, all the time, all at once, 24/7. The driving has to be seen to be believed (likewise, the 10 year olds riding breakneck on scooters up and down staircases). Yet the city itself reeks of history and is overpopulated with beautiful Italian faces, along with truly exotic immigrants from all over the globe, but most especially Africa.
And the food is great.
It is pretty hard to travel these days and feel like you've actually gone to a foreign country. In Naples, I'd be really surprised if there is a Starbucks or a McDonalds.
Apart from some aggressive purse-snatching (easily solved by not carrying one; carry a plastic graocery sack instead with no valuables in it, just a comb, etc.) , the feeling of danger comes from seeing prositutes, frightening-looking guys with tatoos and the speeding traffic. But tourists are not targets of serious crime. Napoli is far safer than any American city you can name, although some neighborhoods are to be avoided. Strangers are not welcome there. But everybody knows where they area and will tell you how to avoid them.
