<<Sorry - don;t like the rules - they don't make sense. I've been to europe more than 100 times since I first went in 1975>> Out of curiosity, nytraveler, when was the last time you were in Europe?

I was in Europe five months ago and although I enjoyed my stay, none of the towns rose to be one of my all time favorites.

mariha - don't worry, no one will pick on you. It's not really about the grammar, it's about being supercilious which you are not.

Is Piraeus pretty or only interesting? Are there charming narrow streets with hanging flowers? Outdoor cafes? Does it look like time has stood still?

1. Berlin
2. It is so full of vibrant life; there are a million things to do, to explore, to experience; there are so many attractions; I return again and again and always see new things - it is truly a world city
3. Fischers Fritz - it has two Michelin stars and specializes in fish and seafood. While dinner is expensive, the lunch menu is affordable and excellent value for money.

I wish I HAD a favorite city in Europe and then I could just stop going to all the others.

Being in Europe "one hundred times" wow, I'll bet your living room is wonderful, too.

Piraeus has some very pretty corners, at least on my eyes. I love sitting in a waterfront cafe on Pasalimani/Zea area for example, or enjoy a meal on Mikrolimano or Piraiki. Views are fantastic and ambiance varies a lot. Narrow streets with hanging flowers are not the normal, but if you know where to look for, there is this "small town" feeling, for example on Profitis Elias hill or Kallipoli area. There are places that time has stand still, like small arcades with shops and tavernes that haven't change for decades.
Of course this was always a city with a chaotic architecture and not a post-card like city, but you can still see say this arcade, changing only a little since 100 years ago: http://tinyurl.com/lzcbmeo or discover tiny kafeneion/taverns like this: http://tinyurl.com/m48n9l3 . And although not pretty, there are buildings that have a story to tell, such as saying this block of flats http://tinyurl.com/pu7wtxv appearing on a 60's movie and still standing on 31, Moutsopoulou street on Zea.
OP asked for the most "wonderful" city, but even if using the word "pretty" or "beautiful" ,I guess this can mean very different things to different people.

PalenQ: do you ever get the satékroket at Febo? I tried the top-selling rundvleeskroket a couple weeks ago but it was like gooey boullion. I think I prefer the saté.

1. Rome, was there in July.
2. Been many times and I always find lots to see and do. I think it's a beautiful, vibrant city. Good for walking.
3. L'Arcangelo or Antico Arco. Both are excellent.

Not following the rules as stated, but because I'm still in a post-France glow (returned 6 days ago from 3 weeks there). I'm going to blame lingering jetlag for my disregard, rather than focus on the phrasing of the question.....
Paris remains the most glorious and repeatable city to DH and me. It was my 10th time to spend a week there, DH's 7th time - and we're already planning the return. We were with non-foodie friends, so no really great restaurants, but Le Troumilu facing the Seine continues to be just a drop-in fave, as is Le Temps des Cerises in the Marais - just a delightful little bistro. And the renovations to the Orsay? Mind-blowingly delightful!
The two other standouts, but without major meals: Dinard in Brittany, which I thought would underwhelm me (but: the weekly market was a blast, and the walk around the seawall, when the tide was out hundreds of yards and people at the waterline were reflected on the sand, with St Malo across the way, it was a Monet moment in motion - and it made us start taking pics of rentals notices, and planning an eventual stay there. talk about a beach week! The other surprise was in Provence: loved Rouissillon! We spent 2/3 of a day there, the only meal was gelato, so can't help with a restaurant, but loved it all!

This is a tough crowd.....my 2 cents.. anyway..
I was in Provence and Nice this year and surprisingly my favourite place was Arles. Touring the arena was a highlight for me.

I don't think it's a "tough crowd" but the OP made it a very tough question. To ask a bunch of travelers for their "most wonderful city in Europe" and then restrict their answers with so many conditions that most of us can't give ours -- well, that borders on cruelty on a travel board.

Yea. That too!

But my favorite post here was the one rather sharply scolding others to just answer the question, and then that poster gave a response that totally didn't answer the question!

Rome
Why? Because I haven't been to Siena in the last 12 months.
Eating Ai Spaghettari in Trastavere - but it was one of many excellent places.

I agree with Siena but that's this week. Thought that pizza in Rome was dreary.
