Mykonos in May 2011
Hello, I read on Fodors Forum that there is a weekend in May when students from Athens go to Mykonos, after their term/semester is finished. (I think that post was from Thanos?)
I will be going to Mykonos in mid May, probably 5/20 - 5/24/2011 but would consider changing my itinerary to a weekend when more people will be there.
Does anyone know which weekend in May 2011 it will be? Thank you!

Alas, Thanos has disappeared without a trace, and efforts to track him down have been futile! ;-) The student weekends on Mykonos are geared to when Greek university exams take place. You might try going to the source some experts on this forum use — Trip Advisor, which has many Greek members.

Last year it was 28th to 31st May. I had friends visiting the island over the Pentacost/Whit Monday weekend 22nd/24th May and they spoke of how the island was having two crazy weekends in a row.
I've emailed a friend on Mykonos and if he knows when the students visit in 2011 I'll get right back to you.
As far as I know they visit after the term has ended but trying to find out online when that will be is almost an impossible task!

I was hoping Bill would see this post and reply.
Bill is the only regular poster on Fodor's (now that Thanos has disappeared) who really knows Mykonos. Jon_rwr, another Mykonos expert, sometimes posts on Fodor's, but you are more likely to get a reply from him on TA. Prove me wrong, Jon! ;-)

LOL Don, Bill got here first and no doubt will have the information long before I could find it.
This question is always a tricky one to answer as the date is not fixed. Also, it's almost impossible to find the term dates online.
goodred, May 21st isn't a public holiday but only a festival day so it may not be just as busy as indicated. If you can bear it have a look at this 9 1/2 minute video of the student weekend last May filmed on the 29th. Bill was, as always, spot on with the date. The last minute or so shows how busy the streets are.

Wow, thank you Jon for the great video. It would nice if there are that many people when I visit, but I realize from Bill that Pentecost/Whit Monday was in May last year, which contributed to the large number of crowds that I see in the video. As long as it's not a ghost town, I'm ok with visiting around May 21st. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Goodred,
The crowds from Pentecost weekend wouldn't have still been there on the 29th when that video was taken — most would have left on Holy Spirit Monday (the 24th) so they could be back to work the next day. So what you saw were the people there for the student weekend.
