As Annhig pointed out some time ago, there are health inequalities in Britain, even with a Government run health service. Although everyone supposedly has equal access, the better educated, better organised and more assertive will always be able to make the best use of what is available.
Overcoming the inequalities in health outcomes is one of the biggest problems facing any nation. Simply putting the blame on the most disadvantaged is unproductive.
The doctor's surgery we use serves a very mixed area. It is surrounded by a social housing estate, but also serves people from the most affluent area of the city. We all use the same hospitals, and see the same doctors. The condition of the housing stock is good. Identify what makes a difference in the population served is not easy.
One of the benefits of having a national health service is that we all know that we have equal entitlement. When other people are ill, we know that they have access to the same care that we enjoy.

I did in fact not read it, but heard it on a program, specifically investigating disparities in infant mortality rates, on television about a week ago. I believe it was on Discovery Health, but it could have been another educational channel. The program thought that possibly the life-long stress of being a minority in a racist society was the culprit, but apparently the jury is out on that. Personally, while I wouldn't completely discount that, I had some trouble buying it as a blanket cause.

It was the program's speculation, not mine. I would be more inclined, personally, to think that it IS related to access to care, but the TV program just wasn't going there. BTW, my DH thinks it was actually a 20/20 segment.
