Please tell us what we must see during our one day stop in Ephesus.

unless it's changed since I've been there over ten years ago, you really aren't going to have to decide, it's mainly one big archeological site and you walk along the road to see the various buildings and can't really decide too much what to see or not.

I assume that you are on a cruise ship and make a limited time stop at the port of Kusadasi.
The town is full of tourist shops ( carpets, leather etc.) most lesser quality and overpriced.

Most go directly to Ephesus- a really wonderful place.
many taxis available to take you there and return - price can and should be bargained for and agreed before the trip .

Start at the top of the city- a much easier walk down hill. many guides available at the gate.
Much to see including homes, mosaics, communal bathroom ,theater, library , agora, and many other buildings.

bring water and snacks.

If time permits on your return- take a walk through the shopping area in kusadasi- looking costs nothing.

Other must see sights to visit after Ephesus in the local area?

I think the Ephesus artifacts are in a museum in nearby Selcuk. We were told to go to Ephesus in the morning while the weather was cooler, then visit the museum in the afternoon. Also, after seeing Ephesus, you can have context for the objects. I thought the museum was very interesting.

If you are on your own, it's worth hiring a guide for Ephesus. Just be sure to engage him/her in conversation to test their English!

There is also the house where Mother Mary lived her last years.

Seljuk Museum, St.John, Ephesus, Virgin Mary's House, Artemission and maybe seven sleepers and Isabey Mosque close to St John.
While in Ephesus by taking extra ticket you can also visit terrace houses which I highly recommend.
Getting a guide and a minivan can save you time while adding further knowledge in depth....

I was last in that area in the 60's, so my memory isn't too accurate, but it seems to me that Troy is around there somewhere, too. There weren't a lot of ruins at Troy, but if you've read the Iliad, the site was very evocative. I was thrilled to be there.

first of all Troy is not near Ephesus.
It is almost 240 milesnorth.
EPHESUS IS the largest and well preserved site and this is where APOPSTLE [PAUL had preached.
on the main site there is a recently opened section Terrace houses woth visiting.
Besides to Roman site are
House of The Virgin Mary
Museum
Temple of Artemis
Cave of Seven Sleepers.
Basilica of St John.

The highlight is the Roman site.
which reqires 2 1/2 hours min and 25 min drive frompier.
The best is to book excursion with your ship or bok an excursion with private guides.I usually do not recomend the guides on the site as they are rushy and not speking good english except few booked check the oneswith recommandation at this board or CC.

It depends on your timetable and interesting.

Thing to see closed to the Port of Kusadasi : Ephesus Ruins, Temple of Artemis, House of Virgin Mary, Bassilica of St. John, Ephesus Archological Museum, Village of Sirince, Miletos, Didyma, Prienne.

Also I reccommend you create some free time to explore Kusadasi Town.

You can google/yahoo and then search for ''ephesus tours'' and ask the local comapnies for their shore excursions.
