I just asked my French co-workers, and they say that <<con>> means idiot, stronger than cloche. It is acceptable for men or women to use it, and it is the most common way to say idiot among the younger generations. The shock of the men when confronted with <<tete de con>> was probably surprise that Americans would know the phrase.
