Munich to Italy....

HI,
I am travelling with my husband to Munich for a week. Since he will be working - I was thinking of heading to either Venice or Rome, someplace within 4 or 5 hours driving distance. Can anyone provide me with some advice on the best ways to get from Munich to Venice or suggest another place that would be nice to visit. I would like to head out from Munich on Friday early morning and return on the Sunday evening.

Thanks!!

S

Fastest one way by rail will take you at least 7 hours and perhaps 1/2 more with a change (usually in Verona).

Flying budget, all I could find from Munich on www.whichbudget.com was to Bologna (direct)..perhaps there may be other budget routes (changing once?) you could fly.

Have you considered Salzburg, Vienna, or Prague?

Or Berlin, for that matter..if you'd like to see a whole different aspect of German cities/life.

Thanks so much for your reply!
I was also thinking about Prague, I have heard wonderful things about it. How far is it from Munich do you know?

Hi sh,

Go to www.viamichelin.com and www.mappy.com for driving directions, distances and times between cities.

You might want to consider driving; it is 6 hours by rail but that is without changes and leaving at a little after 6:00 AM..otherwise it takes a bit longer but the trip can entail up to FIVE changes of train.

Not sure if there are budget flights but I'll have a look at that for you.

No direct budget flights that I can find but there is non-stop service on Czech Airways; trip takes about one hour and five minutes one way. I looked up fares using www.opodo.com

Shwe - You wouldn't need a car IN Venice - so really train or plane would be better options.

Have you considered overnight train - to give you more sightseeing time?
Just a thought ...

Steve

P.S. Other options in Italy?
Verona? The Dolomites? Lake Garda?Trento?
