Munich hotels - Uhland Garni or An der Oper

I have never been to Germany before, so I have done some research on hotels for my 2 extra nights in Munich following an escourted tour. I would like to stay in a hotel that is conveiniently located within an easy walking distance to museums, castles and churches: and/ or located within an easy walk to subway and bus stations so that I can get to these types of attractions.
I would also like to stay in a hotel that felt "quaint and German" as opposed to a nice upscale generic hotel that could be located anywhere in the world.

The hotel Uhland Garni appears to be very quaint but I can't figure out its location within the city. The hotel An der Oper seems to be in a great location but I can not find any photos of it. If anyone knows any information on these two hotels or others that would suit my needs, please respond.

Note: I would like to keep the price under $100 Euro's a night and I really would like to have a bathtub unless that throws the price up too much.
I loved the Uhland. It has the greatest breakfast anywhere. It is a 10 minute walk to the train station where you can get to anywhere you want to go. It is, however, in a residential neighborhood, which is nice because it's quiet, but you will have to walk quite a way to get to a restaurant for dinner. If you want to walk right out the door and get to places like the Glockenspiel or the Hofbrauhaus in just a couple of minutes, the Uhland is not for you. You will have to take the easy and convenient public transportation. But if you want a big quiet hotel where you can sleep well and EAT BREAKFAST well, the Uhland is wonderful.

Gina,

Is the public transportation a close walk from the Uhland? How close is the nearest bus or subway stop from the Uhland? Also, once on the public transportation, how far is this from all the museums, restaurants, churches, etc.?

The train station is also the subway station, a ten minute walk away from the Uhland. From there is seems like it was only a few minutes to the Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel. We took a lot of taxis too which were reasonable. My parents stayed in the Hotel Eden Wolff which is literally steps from the train station. They loved it. We joined them for dinner one night and the food was divine. I would say the Uhland would be fine if you don't mind using the subway and taxis.

Have been to Munich 7 or 8 times on pleasure and business and have stayed at the Uhland every time but one, when it was booked.

Cannot reccommend it enough. Great breakfast, large rooms, nice location, friendly help and reasonably priced.

IMHO, one of the very best hotel bargains in all of Europe!

US

Forgot to add...the Uhland is about a 10 minute walk to the Sendlinger Tor and perhaps a 15 minute walk to the Marienplatz.

US

We highly recommend the Uhland. It is a one or two minute walk to the bus stop with the bus taking about five minutes to the main train station. There is a U-bahn station at Theresienwiese which is about a five minute walk. There is a nice neighborhood restaurant about three minutes walk in the direction of Theresienwiese.

I liked the Uhland, too, and I agree that it's not right smack "where the action is," but it's still a good location and the staff is nice. I also enjoy their breakfast! And the internet access really helps!

It seems like the Uhland is definately favored. For those of you who have stayed here, please tell me how you got to and from the airport from this hotel. How long did it take, how easy or difficult and how much money.

I am seriously considering getting the Welcome card for the public transportation but I will not use it to get to the airport if it seems as if it is much easier and fairly inexpensive to go by cab.

FYI, there will be two adults and a 10 year old on the trip.

I took the S bahn from the airport to the main station....then cabbed it to the Uhland. Much cheaper and easier that way!

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Uhland about 6 years ago. It wasn't even talked about on this site then. We absolutely loved it and would recommend it anytime someone asked. It was out first trip to Europe so if anyone could get lost it would have been us. We took the train from the airport and got off at the main station and walked the 4 or 5 blocks (we didn't have rolling suitcases back then either). I don't remember the price of the train but it wasn't expensive. My memory could be off but I think the train ride was only about 30-40 min. from the airport. We walked to everything from there and didn't need public transportation unless we ventured far past the main sites. The train system is so easy to follow and quick. Munich is small and easy to navigate. Our room had a wonderful down stuffed featherbed and comforter. There was a little terrace off our room. I agree breakfast was one of the best I ever had. Back then we got a great internet price and I am glad to see the prices are still a bargain. The building itself is so lovely and charming. Go for it!

Denise
