Hello,

I am looking for a hotel in Munich for 2 nights - August 28 & 29. We pick up a BMW at the Welt on Monday, August 30, and begin our drive around Germany.

Anyway I'd like something clean and in easy walking distance of things to do - we will not have a car on Saturday or Sunday. If breakfast is included that is a bonus, but not a must. Neither my husband nor myself has been to Germany before, so it would be nice to explore Munich, but we also will need some downtime to recover a little from our flight. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Budget constraints?

Well, if it's something special we will spend the money - though we've ruled out the Mandarin Oriental as that seems VERY expensive. We're happy to do something cheaper too - we don't have to have a fancy room, but we will be there 2 nights so we want to be able to get a good night's rest and be comfortable. And to be able to walk around and be near interesting plazas, restaurants, etc. would be a plus.

On the rest of the trip, our accommodations run the gamut - from 130euros/night to a night at a Relais Chateaus property in France that is on the expensive side.

For something a little more on the fancy side, we enjoyed the Hotel Torbraeu, located right inside the wall of the historic center of Munich. Very classy, small but very nicely appointed rooms, good service and an excellent breakfast (it is quite unusual for breakfast NOT to be included in Germany). I just checked and doubles run 189-276 Euro.

I think the Sofitel Bayerpost in Munich is one of the best options. While it can get expensive at peak times (such as Oktoberfest), it's normally great value for money. Modern design behind a historic facade. A bit dark with dark woods, grey fabrics and some violet walls, but the whole ensemble works. Fantastic and visually unusual spa in the basement.
Location-wise, it is adjacent to the main station. Convenient best describes it. The immediate vicinity is not the prettiest, but a 7 minute walk takes you to the start of the Kaufinger Str. pedestrian area in the centre (and being directly at the main station implies great public transport connections to almost anywhere anyway).

We love to stay at Sofitel Bayerpost and have done so several times. The hotel amenities and service are superb and we like the location.

If you want to go for something high-end, I recommend the Bayerischer Hof. It is located on Promenadeplatz within walking distance of Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, Michaelskirche and many of the sites you would want to visit. The hotel is beautiful, and the breakfast buffet is delicious.

I have FINALLY decided & booked our hotel for Munich & thought I'd update you all. We are going to stay 2 nights at the Sofitel Bayerpost - we got a great deal online. We decided that comfort was of main importance - comfy bed, air conditioning, etc. - as this will be our first 2 nights in Germany. And after our stay here we pick up a car and drive for 5 days straight! Sounds like the Sofitel will suit our purpose nicely. Thanks for the suggestion, hsv!

For transportation from the airport to the hotel I suggest looking closely into the Lufthansa shuttle bus (open for passengers of all other airlines, too), that goes directly to Hauptbahnhof with only one brief stop on the way. One-way fare is EUR 10.50, about the same as a 1-way ticket on the train (EUR 9.60), which (depending on traffic for the bus) could take longer and is less comfortable in my experience.
At your arrival at the main station, you'd just cross the main hall of the station and walk right for about 80 yards and you are at the hotel (total of abot 250 yard walk). No stairs etc. to negotiate with luggage either at the airport nor at the station/hotel.

The benefit of the train is that a daypass valid from the airport will set you back about EUR 10.40, so you'd get free use of public transportation for the rest of the day at the same price as the bus. Good if you intend to venture out of the hotel and use buses, trams and trains during the day of your arrival.

Enjoy Sofitel - it's my favorite in Munich.

If you enjoy a nice glass of wine, walk a few blocks to Giselle's Vinotek at Hotel Excelsior. Good food as well.

Thanks for the tips! Such a huge help as we've never been to Germany before. We do like using public transportation when we travel - in our experience, it is not hard to figure out, works well, & affordable. So thanks for the info on that aspect, hsv.

And we do enjoy wine - I'm not a beer drinker, so I keep wondering about that in Germany! - but Giselle's Vinotek sound great, kfusto.
