Apart from Neuschwanstein & Linderhof, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and
Regensburg, where can I spend a nice day? Keep in mind that this will be December, and we already visited Innsbruck and Salzburg, and we are coming from Nuremberg. Is Mittenwald or Augsburg nice and intereseting for a day?

Augsburg is a very pleasant town to visit. We were there in April. I have also visited it in Advent season but that was decades ago. I would visit the Golden Room in the Rathaus (Town hall), the area around the cathedral and the Christmas Market directly in front of the Rathaus.

Someone else mentioned Landshut. We visited there in December 2009. The town is literally filled with baroque facades on the buildings. It has the tallest brick church tower (St. Martin's). The walk up to the castle is great weather permitting. It is a great, close day trip from Munich by train. The Christmas Market is a small community affair that might be a relief after Munich's Marienplatz.

Yes a great deal - even goes into Austria a bit (also valid on trains Garmishc thru Austria to Reutte - jumping off point for Fussen I think because it is a German train starting in Germany and ending in Germany.

But on Munich to Salzburg you will take about an hour or so longer each way over the faster trains - cutting down a bit on day trip time - you can get 29 euro discounted tickets on fast trains but still the Bavarian Pass or whatever you call it can save a ton at the sacrifice of riding slower and IME much less comfortable trains.
