Munich and Ulm

We (husband, me and our 2 girls,14 &16)will be flying into Munich and thinking of 3 nights there. We have read about Ulm and considering driving there and spending the night before winding our way to our apartment in Berchtesgaden. (It is from this apartment we will be day touring Southern Bavaria taking in Fussen, Salzburg, etc) What we have is one night to spend between Munich and Berchtesgaden. Would appreciate any thoughts or input. Also, is this too much time in Munich?

I have changed trains numerous times in Ulm, and climbed to the top of the munster there twice. The view from the top was spectacular. However, I don't think that, in itself, justifies a trip all the way from Munich.

I don't know how many nights you are planning on spending in Berchtesgaden, but you might consider making Füssen a side trip from Munich and then staying closer to Berchtesgaden and Salzburg. There is plenty to see from Berchtesgaden without going all the way to Füssen.

Also, public transportation in the So. Bavaria is so good a car is not necessary.

Hi Wendymc,
Just a thought... maybe 2 nights Munich, 2 nights Fuessen and then to Berchtesgaden, as Fuessen is really out of the area of Berchtesgaden. The 2 nights in Fuessen gives you 1 full day to tour Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, ride the luge ride at Tegelberg (a few times!), 1 mile from Neuschwanstein and maybe take the cable car there. On the way to Fuessen from Munich good stops are Andechs Monestary (very nice church and outdoor beer gardens which seemed to be family oriented) and the Wieskirche.

Just my opinion, we always have a car and think it's the only way to go in these areas.

Thanks Paul and Larry...we are renting an apartment in Munich to save on the cost of accomodations (and feeding teenagers!). A 3 night stay is required and since we are arriving early afternoon, we will really on have 2 days in Munich.
We will pick up a car after our Munich stay as we plan on driving from Berchtesgaden to Venice..stopping along the way in the Dolomites for a few days. I will discuss this with my husband, forgoing Ulm and driving to Fussen and spending the night there and then heading over to Berchtesgaden...I know the luge will make our 14 year old very happy!

Hi W,

It is 3:30 hr from Berchtesgaden to Fuessen.

It would be better to spend another night in Munich and visit Neuschwanstein and Linderhof from there.

It is only 1:40 hr from M to B.

You will need a road tax sticker (vignette) to drive on the main roads in Austria - about 10E at any German gas station near the border.

Fuel is cheaper in Austria than in Germany.

Enjoy your visit.

So you think 2 days in Munich is enough? I nailed down my entrance/exit to Europe today and know that I need to divide 7 days/nights between Munich and London.

Our demographics are a 46yo mom and 14yo daughter. We know we want to see some churches, the art museums and Dachau. Is that doable in 2 days, with one a Sunday? We spent 2-1/2 days in London last summer and loved it and are looking forward to returning and seeing more, plus at least one show--this year will be Spamalot I think.

The decision on splitting the time is whether to have 4 days in Munich and 3 in London or vice versa....

Welcome all suggestions.
