We are booked at the brand new Novotel right at the airport. It opens later this month. We will be coming in from Vienna and have an early morning flight back to the U.S. so plan to roll off the plane, check in, head to Freising for dinner and a stroll and then spend the night at the Novotel so no transfers needed.
Rates are very good.

The Novotel is not that close to the terminals that you could walk. Technically you can, but you probably don't want to roll your luggage 20 minutes along the airport access freeway. The 635 bus to/from Freising connects the terminals also with the Novotel though. Alternatively, take any S-Bahn from the airport train station one stop to "Besucherpark" (Visitor center) and walk appr. 5min to the Novotel.

Cowboy, I see that I may indeed not be getting the whole picture. I looked at your post again so I am curious as it the website seems to indicate it is in a terminal. If we have to take a shuttle, we may as well stay in Freising.

The brand new Novotel "Munich Airport" is on the airport's premises, but not within or connected to one of the two terminals. It's appr. 1.2kms as the bird flies from the terminals, or 1.5kms walking/driving distance.
You will not take a hotel shuttle but the regular 635 bus. Staying at the airport's Novotel might still have the upside that the ride to the terminal is very short (5min) compared to taking the bus all the way from Freising. But the bus only runs every 20min so you should plan ahead when you need to leave the hotel.

I think I will book the Kempinski instead. I am traveling with my mother who is 79 and I want this to be as easy as possible so getting on and off a us with bags is more hassle than it is worth. The Kempinki is well rated and right at the airport.
Thank you very much for pointing out my error!
We can still take a taxi into Freising for dinner and enjoy our last evening in Germany.

The Holiday Inn Express is not right at the airport, but it does have a shuttle and seems to get good reviews. Has anyone stayed there? Is it in the town (Schwaig) near restaurants?
