The most one can say about the weather in the UK is that it is variable... (though it rarely goes to extremes of heat or cold)

Here is what the Met Office's website says about rain: Typically, it rains on about one day in three in England, perhaps somewhat more often in winter, though long, dry spells occur in most years.

Sheffield will probably have a bit more rain than Colchester. Snow occurs on a few days in most years, and we are always completely unprepared for it.

hi jules,
Greetings from Sheffield.
For what it's worth...I moved here from Iowa City last August with my husband and two young children, aged 2 and 8 months.I was dreading the transition from a small, very friendly University town to what I thought would be a nasty, unattractive industrialsed city.I've been very pleasantly surprised. We live in Netheredge (close to the University)which is a nice, leafy well established residential neighbourhood. There is a very active theatre and classical music scene here The city centre is really nice with good shopping, some nice places to eat /drink.The parks are lovely to walk in and as everyone says,if you live in the areas I mention below you really are right on the edge of the Peak District-really beautiful, fabulous amenity.
The key areas for decent accommadation are S8,S10 and S11 and perhaps parts of S7.We found most of the more suitable places in postcodes S10 and 11.There are two main (reliable)real estate agents for good rentals-Crapper and Haigh and Blundells (in that order)-both are on line and they update their websites very regularly.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Sheffield.
All the best,Hilary.
