Dear mjdh1957,
Thanks for the comment. I had visited Dubrovnik about 10 years ago and at that time I had promised my self to take my family with me to there. I will try... I certainly will remove Brac from my plan.
Did you travel around with a car or RV?
Thanks for the valuable info though.

tulo, apart from the main road along the coast most of Croatia is serpentine and narrow. I guess you will be good at this sort of driving by then but I note you raised some concerns and I thought i should feed back.
I think Dubrovnik is ruined by the floating pig-stys that moor there. I would look at Split and Trogir, but even these will be busy. Still you are already going up into the hills so good luck.
I wish you luck in balancing out the communication over concentration camps. It will take a lot of skill to balance the "why are we here?" and "why are those people crying?" stuff with the "a nasty thing happened here". However, the worst that can happen is they get to understand just how bad humans can be. I'd go for it.

You're talking about the murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians - genocide on an unprecedented scale - and there was no problem?
Did the kids realize at all what happened there? If not - why take them? do you/they think it was a summer camp?????

So -- you plan on using an audio guide and have your kids walk around Dachau wondering what everything is about and probably (innocently) yakking and disturbing other visitors who are there for more solemn reasons. Sorry, but you sound fairly insensitive. It is not disneyland or a place to check off a list. I'd give it a pass if I were you.

I did a trip with my parents and siblings many years ago in a VW Camper. We stayed in campgrounds and took public transportation to visit sights. My parents found that travel with a family was much better when we stayed in one place for at least several days rather than making frequent changes. We kids enjoyed playing at campground playgrounds, meeting other children and having a chance to stretch our legs. We did get a lot out of visiting the cities, towns and tourist sights but didn't enjoy long drives.

tulo,
This was many years ago when I was a teenager. I was 14 at the time and my youngest sibling was 8. My father was working on a sabbatical project and we traveled much of Europe over a 6 month period. It was an amazing experience that really shaped my life. I learned so much and will never forget that trip.

Provided you are insured for the camper I would go for it. Buy a book of campsites (ASCII for instance). Many sites keep a few places for tourers even in high season, so you don't have to have everything set in stone before you go.
Do not be too ambitious in your plans, have a goal, but don't feel too bad if you don't cover all the ground you want to.
Many cities have a city campsite on the edge of them, some even have them nearer the centre. They usually have good public transport links into the centre from the campsites, so you can leave the camper there and head in by bus/tram/train.
Germany has plenty of camper only parks, some with hookups, some without, but mostly just a concrete parking area, which is fine for an overnight stop, but not for a longer stay.
I don't know the rules about wild camping in the countries you plan to visit - you need to check that out, and aim to stay in campsites as much as possible, rather than in a lay-by or car park. More fun for everyone if the kids can get out and play safely at a campsite at the end of the day.

Thanks all.
I think that I will cut some of the places (Munich, Wien and Budapest) off the list and try my best to visit as many places as possible provided that my kids and my wife are ready to move to the next one. For this reason I think my route will be just towards the opposite way (Luxembourg - Lake Como and Lugano - Venice - Croatian Coast line/Plitvitce Natural Park - Mostar/Sarajevo- Bled - Hallstatt Austria- ??? Either directly to Luxembourg or I can see Wien if my schedule allows me to do so.).
Let us see what will happen.
