And don't forget to alert your ATM bank and credit card companies that you'll be traveling overseas, or they may put a hold/fraud alert on your card because of "unusual activity."

There are some countries, not Western Europe, where they prefer being paid in $US since it is more stable than their local currency. I just returned from Tanzania Africa and we were often quoted prices in both US$ and shillings, both for items and hotels.

ATM is the way to go. Only caveat is if you have to pay a large hotel bill could require several trips. Do not buy euros at home, unless you want a few just to get you from airport to hotel.

Many of the replies are brutally blunt with not so niceness and understanding!

It was a freakin' simple question as the lady hasn't travelled to Europe before. I haven't either and that's why I was doing the research. Now I know how not to ask a question as I see the jerks out there!

I think the question was answered very clearly and fully.

It's also a year-old thread.

At the risk of being accused of being brutally blunt, why comment on a thread that had been dormant for a year?

Especially when the original poster returned twice in the thread to comment or expand on things and there is no indication he or she had taken offense at anything that had been said.

Accusing others of being jerks in your maiden post is not a good way to win friends or influence people. ;^)

Welcome to Fodors RedFish- also at the risk of being brutally honest - what on EARTH are you on about? The OP was just fine w/ everyone's responses. The rudest person on the whole thread seems to be . . . you
