updated itinerary :
After more research, I have decided to spend 2 night in Stresa with day trios to the islands. I will be staying in town. So inhave one day and I am tempted to do an overnight in Venice (I have been once). Would it be best to tack on a day in Verona and do a day tour or go straight to Venice? Has anyone done this?
Milan - Stresa 2 night - ???? - Verona 2 night - Vernazza - 2 night- Mllan 2 nights

"Would it be best to tack on a day in Verona and do a day tour or go straight to Venice?"
Stresa to Verona by train takes 3.5-4 hours. Verona to Venice is 1+ hour.
Venice to Vernazza by train takes almost 6 hours. Verona to Vernazza is at least 5.5 hours.
Vernazza to Milano Centrale takes at least 4 hours.
IMO, your combination of destinations in a 9-10 day trip only makes sense if you love trains and like the heat and crowds of summer.
BTW, if you put Stresa last, you wouldn't have to split your time in Milan. You could spend the last night in Stresa and take the Alibus to Malpensa. There are 6 buses a day, and the journey takes about an hour.
