Beside the usual (Cinque Terre et al) i have enjoyed the Genoa waterfront, the boatride into Portofino (the town itself ain't much, IMO) and Rapallo.
In Milan the duomo, the galleria and La Scala (both for the opera and the opera museum). If you are at all a foodie Peck is the most beautiful food and wine store in the world.

brad1066, I am doing the exact same thing in September. We are spending the weekend in Milan to shop. Heading to the coast for the week. I love Milan. You can do many day trips from Milan, if that is your base. The same at the coast - we are staying in SML. Lots of great transportation available. I'd rather stay put in one place and do day trips out. Nice to come back to the city for some nightlife.
My best experiences off the beaten path were just discovered by accident. Have a map in your pocket just in case.
